Amid the Maharashtra civic polls, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi chief and Dr B R Ambedkar's grandson Prakash Ambedkar on Thursday claimed that the local body polls across the state would prove to be a turning point, ‘ending’ the BJP's dominance of the last ten years.
While talking to the media on Thursday, Prakash Ambedkar said that no single party would gain absolute power in any civic body, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as reported by news agency PTI.
Prakash Ambedkar cast his vote in Akola along with his wife, Anjali Ambedkar, during the local body polls in Maharashtra.
Voting is underway on Thursday for 29 municipal corporations in the state, including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Akola.
Prakash Ambedkar asserted, “I am closely observing the municipal elections this time. This election will prove to be a turning point, ending the BJP's dominance of the last ten years,” as per PTI.
He also added that the BJP wants a one-party system, but this election is against it, as people want a multi-party system, reported PTI.
Ambedkar also claimed that no single party would gain complete power in any municipal corporation, including the BMC. His party, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, has tied up with the Congress for the civic polls in Mumbai.
Ambedkar also added, “Incidents of money being distributed are happening during the elections, but voters themselves are driving away such people. This is a positive sign for democracy,” as per PTI.
Congress ally VBA failed to get candidates on 20 seats
Earlier, before filing the nominations for the local body polls, the alliance between Congress and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) for BMC Election 2026 in a very strange sequence of scenarios suffered a setback. As reported by PTI, the Prakash Ambedkar-led party reportedly lacked candidates for 20 of the 62 seats allocated to it for the local body polls.
With the deadline for filing nominations for the January 15 elections ending on Tuesday, the VBA 'disclosure' may require Congress to rework the poll strategy.
The 143-62 seat-sharing formula was announced on Sunday between the Congress and VBA for the 227-member BMC Election in 2026. Earlier, the alliance had also come to the collective decision of allotting some seats to the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and RPI (Gavai) faction.
A Congress leader, while highlighting the issue days before the civic polls, asserted, “The VBA informed the Congress that it didn't have candidates in 20 seats and has 'returned' them, reacting to the development,” as cited by news agency PTI.
