Governor-designate Jishnu Dev Varma arrived in Mumbai on Monday ahead of taking oath as the new Governor of Maharashtra. He was welcomed at the airport by senior state leaders, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Varma landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport along with his wife Sudha Dev Varma. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to be held at Lok Bhavan in south Mumbai on March 10.
President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Jishnu Dev Varma as the new Governor of Maharashtra. The appointment is part of a wider reshuffle of Governors across several states.
Grand welcome by Maharashtra leadership
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally received the Governor-designate and his wife at the airport on Monday afternoon.
Several senior leaders and officials were present during the reception, including Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar.
Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Ram Shinde, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, and senior cabinet members including Jaykumar Rawal and Ashish Shelar.
Oath ceremony scheduled at Lok Bhavan
Jishnu Dev Varma will formally assume office as the Governor of Maharashtra on March 10.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Lok Bhavan, the official residence of the Maharashtra Governor in south Mumbai. The event is expected to be attended by senior political leaders, government officials and dignitaries from across the state.
Following the oath, Varma will take charge of the constitutional responsibilities associated with the office of the Governor.
Political career and background
Jishnu Dev Varma comes from the royal family of Tripura and has had a long association with politics in the northeastern state.
He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023 and played a significant role in the state government during that period.
Born on August 15, 1957, in Agartala, Varma entered public life after completing his education and gradually became active in political activities in the state.
He formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 1990s and rose through the ranks over the years. His political career eventually culminated in his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister, where he held important responsibilities in the state administration.
