A group of activists from Chhava Sanghatna allegedly attempted to set fire to the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) office in Jalna late on Sunday night, just hours after a violent confrontation between NCP workers and Chhava Sanghatna activists in Latur, reported PTI.
The police have filed a case against five activists of Chhava Sanghatna for the arson attempt, an official said.
According to officials, the activists arrived at the NCP office around 11 pm carrying a bottle of petrol, which they poured on the office shutter before setting it ablaze. However, the fire was quickly extinguished by NCP staff members who were present at the office, preventing further damage.
The accused activists were reportedly chanting slogans against key NCP leaders, including Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP state president Sunil Tatkare.
The dispute began when Chhava Sanghatna activists confronted Maharashtra Unit President Sunil Tatkare during a press conference, throwing a deck of playing cards at him. The protest was in response to a viral video that showed Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate allegedly playing a mobile game of rummy during the recent monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The incident triggered widespread anger, with activists demanding Kokate's resignation.
The situation quickly spiraled into violence when NCP workers physically attacked the Chhava Sanghatna activists. Police intervened to separate the two groups, but the clash left both the parties deeply involved in anger which resulted in heightened tensions.
NCP's Jalna unit president, Arvind Chavan, condemned the arson attempt and submitted a memorandum to the district superintendent of police, demanding the arrest of those responsible, reported PTI.
Clash over minister's mobile 'game' video: Ajit Pawar asks NCP youth wing chief to step down
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday directed the party’s youth wing president Suraj Chavan to resign from his post.
Chavan was allegedly involved in an attack against Chhava Sanghatna on Sunday. He had alleged that the incident was triggered after Chhava Sanghatna leader Vijay Ghatge and other office-bearers allegedly used abusive language against NCP leaders.
In a statement, Pawar said the decision to ask Chavan to step down was necessary as his behaviour was "against the values of the party and would not be tolerated".
"The strict decision has been taken as his behaviour goes against the party's values and will not be tolerated, Pawar, who had summoned Chavan to meet him," Pawar said in a statement while terming the incident as "condemnable".
The Chhava Sanghatna activists were protesting against Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate after a video went viral showing him purportedly playing a game of rummy on his phone during the recently concluded Monsoon Session of the state legislature.
"We lost our cool and took the extreme step. Just because we are in power doesn't mean we are doing anything wrong," Chavan told reporters on Sunday.
