Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena party workers have reached Dharashiv district to aid flood-hit families, an official statement said.
It said that while most people on Thursday celebrate Dussehra with sweets and rituals, Shiv Sainiks chose to mark the festival by helping flood-affected families in Athardi village, Kalamb taluka, Dharashiv district.
Following the heavy rains in September, many families in Marathwada were left devastated. Responding to the situation, Eknath Shinde had earlier told his party workers across the state to skip the traditional Dussehra rally in Mumbai and instead offer direct support to farmers on the ground, the statement said.
Shinde had earlier stated that the party will call workers of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) only for the Dussehra rally on October 2, and workers from other regions will try to help the farmers and others in flood-affected areas.
"We have always been about 80 per cent social work and 20 per cent politics. This is the time for doing social work and helping people," he had said.
The statement further said that in line with the appeal, Shiv Sena party workers, including Yuva Sena's Marathwada in-charge Bajirao Chavan, former MLA Dnyanraj Chougule, Bhagwan Devkate, Ajit Pingale, and Nitin Landge, visited flood-hit households in Athardi.
They helped clean homes filled with mud and debris, organised household items, sanitised the premises, and even cleaned and restored the damaged Anganwadi centre (childcare facility) in the village. Shiv Sainiks also distributed 26 essential items to families that lost everything in the floods, it further said.
During their visit, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde spoke with the affected families via video call.
Shinde had on Tuesday assured support for farmers affected by recent flooding in Marathwada and other regions of the state due to heavy rainfall.
He had said that the Mahayuti government has already begun distributing financial aid of Rs 10,000 in cash, along with rice and wheat, to those in need of essential supplies in flood-hit areas.
Party members in other districts are also reported to have celebrated the festival in a similar way, choosing to support those in need rather than participate in large political gatherings, the statement said.
