Ahead of the Maharashtra local body polls, the Mumbai civic body on Tuesday finalised reservation for 227 wards for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls.

The draw for determining reserved wards was conducted on November 11, 2025 at the Bal Gandharva Rangmandir hall in Bandra (West) area of Mumbai under the supervision of Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagarani, an official statement said.

It said that a total of 78 seats have been reserved for different categories including-

Scheduled Castes (SC): 15 seats (including 8 for women)

Scheduled Tribes (ST): 2 seats (including 1 for women)

Other Backward Classes (OBC): 61 seats (including 31 for women)

"74 seats have been reserved for general category women, making a total of 114 seats for women across all categories," the statement said.

It said that the reservation was carried out according to the BMC Rules 2025, which include rotation and draw procedures to ensure fair distribution. The draw involved lottery-based selection, and students from Lakshminagar School in Khar helped in the process.

The Mumbai civic chief and officials provided detailed guidance on the reservation process, explaining how seats were distributed for SC, ST, OBC, and women candidates. The draw was conducted transparently in front of officials and citizens, and the remaining 75 wards remain unreserved for the general category, the statement said.

It said that this is the first BMC election to follow the new rules that specify rotational reservation across different wards.

Earlier, according to an official notification, a draft reservation will be open for objections and suggestions from November 14 to 20, 2025.

"The citizens can submit their feedback to the respective election ward offices or online via the BMC website," the notification had earlier said.

It said that the reservation allocation will cover categories such as Scheduled Caste (Women), Scheduled Tribe (Women), Other Backward Classes (OBC), OBC (Women), and General Women candidates.

The objections and suggestions can be submitted until 3 pm on November 20 after which the final reservation notification will be issued, it said.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Maharashtra State Election Commission had on Tuesday announced that the elections in 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats across Maharashtra were scheduled to take place on December 2, with counting of votes set for December 3.

The state Election Commission, however, have not yet declare the schedule for BMC elections.
