The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) will soon summon the doctors from Vashi who have been accused of negligence in a case where six elderly patients reportedly lost their vision following cataract surgeries in Navi Mumbai.
MMC administrator Dr Vinky Rughwani confirmed to Sunday mid-day that the council has taken cognisance of the matter.
Rughwani said, “We will be calling the doctors concerned for a hearing soon. We have also sent them communication seeking their explanation regarding the allegations.”
The development comes days after the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) launched an internal probe into the controversial surgeries performed at a private clinic in Vashi. The procedures have allegedly left six senior citizens partially or completely blind. The affected families have accused the doctors of gross negligence and have been demanding strict action.
While the NMMC’s health department is collecting evidence and statements from the clinic and the victims’ families, the MMC’s involvement adds a regulatory and disciplinary dimension to the case. The council, which oversees medical practice in Maharashtra, has the authority to suspend or revoke licences of doctors found guilty of professional misconduct.
According to sources, the doctors will have the chance to present their defence before the MMC, which will then review all evidence before deciding on further action. Patient rights activists say the outcome of this hearing could set a precedent for quicker disciplinary action in similar cases.
