Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol on Wednesday announced that efforts were underway to ensure no accidents occur at the Pune airport. Mohol organised a high-level meeting with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, airport authorities and Indian Air Force officers to discuss issues concerning the Pune airport.

The growing presence of stray dogs and birds at the airport has started disrupting aircraft operations, raising serious safety concerns. A recent incident where a bird hit an aircraft engine brought the issue into the spotlight. Also, a leopard was reportedly spotted near the runway, further highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures. Taking note of the situation, the minister convened the meeting to address the repeated animal intrusions on the runway.

‘Serious threat’

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, Mohol emphasised the seriousness of the issue, stating, “Stray dogs have been frequently spotted on the airfield, and bird activity has increased around the runway. This has already led to bird-hit incidents. Moreover, a leopard was recently seen near the runway. These pose a serious threat to aviation safety, and permanent preventive measures must be implemented jointly by all departments concerned.”

During Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to Pune, PMC teams were deployed at the airport to capture stray dogs and prevent any disruption during the VIP movement. This once again highlighted the vulnerability of airport security and triggered the latest round of administrative action.

Dumping issue

According to officials, garbage dumping within a 5-6 km radius of the airport is attracting animals. A recent survey identified 11 chronic dumping spots, which will now be cleared as part of an intensified clean-up effort. The goal is to eliminate all such waste zones to prevent interference in flight operations.

“Efforts are underway to ensure no accidents occur at Pune airport. The forest department has closed off hideouts near the runway that the leopard could have used. Nets and cages have also been installed at key points,” said Mohol.

He also clarified that there are no leaks or damages inside the terminal building, and certain reports claiming roof leakage were false. Unauthorised constructions and encroachments near the airport perimeter were also discussed, and the PMC has been asked to act against such structures.
