Shiv Sena-BJP alliance emerges as leading force in Thane

In Thane, the BJP emerged secured at least 17 seats, outperforming its rivals by wide margins.

The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance emerged as the leading force in the 131-member Thane Municipal Corporation on Friday.

According to official data available so far, the ruling combine has won 50 seats in total.

The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena secured 33 wards, while the BJP won 17 seats in the civic body, which is considered the home turf of Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, reported the PTI.

The Shiv Sena had contested 79 seats and the BJP 38.

The Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) recorded a notable performance by winning five of the 15 seats it contested. In the previous term of the Thane civic body, the AIMIM had only two corporators, the news agency reported.

Mahayuti ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, contested the elections separately and has so far won seven seats, officials said.

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) has secured eight seats out of the 40 wards it contested, according to trends. Its allies, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress, have suffered major setbacks in the results declared so far.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) has managed to win just one seat out of the 64 it contested, while the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), headed by Raj Thackeray, has failed to open its account.

Other parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), have also not registered any victories in the results announced so far.

Among independent candidates, only one has emerged victorious out of the 174 who contested the elections.

As of Friday evening, results for 72 seats had been declared, while counting for the remaining 59 seats was still underway.

BJP's impressive results in Pune

The BJP also delivered an impressive showing in Pune, Nashik and Nagpur, where it either retained or expanded its influence in the civic bodies.

Despite forging an alliance with the faction led by his uncle, NCP chief and Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday failed to protect the party's traditional bastions of Pune and neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad, as the BJP decimated both the NCPs in the municipal corporation elections.

The trends showed on Friday that the BJP was heading for a decisive victory in both cities. In Pune, the saffron party was leading in more than 110 seats, while the NCP was ahead in 12 seats and the NCP (Sharad Pawar) in two. In Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP was leading in 84 seats, while the NCP was ahead in 37, according to the PTI.

BJP's notable gains in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the BJP made notable gains, signalling growing support in the Marathwada region.

The BJP won 58 of the 115 seats, comfortably crossing the majority threshold in the Municipal Corporation elections in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad).

AIMIM has emerged as the second-largest party, winning 33 seats.

BJP's victory in CM Fadnavis' home turf

In Nagpur, home turf of CM Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari, counting trends and results for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation suggest a near-repeat of the 2017 results, leaving the Congress struggling to make significant inroads despite an aggressive campaign.

The BJP is on course to surpass the 2017 tally of 108 seats in the 151-member Nagpur civic body, as per the PTI.

Leading in Nashik

The BJP took a commanding lead in the Nashik Municipal Corporation elections, emerging ahead in 71 of the 122 seats, according to trends.

The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena trailed with leads in 26 seats, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) was ahead in 15 wards.

The NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) led in five seats, and the Congress held a lead in three.

The Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) secured a lead in one seat, while another seat was led by a different candidate.
