The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (ST) earned a record revenue of Rs 137.37 crore from passenger fares during the four-day period of August 8 to 11, coinciding with the Rakshabandhan festival.

On August 11 alone, the ST recorded a remarkable single-day revenue of Rs 39 crore from passenger transport. This marks the highest revenue earned in the current financial year, said Transport Minister and ST Corporation Chairman Pratap Sarnaik.

According to Sarnaik every year, ST witnesses peak earnings during the festivals of Rakshabandhan and Bhai Dooj (Diwali) owing to the significant passenger traffic of siblings visiting each others’ homes. Consequently, Rakshabandhan has consistently been the period when ST achieves its highest revenue of the year.

This year, there was an overwhelming rush of passengers on Rakshabandhan and the following day. According to the transport department, MSRTC earned Rs 30.06 crore on the day preceding Rakshabandhan (August 8), Rs 34.86 crore on the day of the festival (August 9), Rs 33.36 crore on the next day (August 10), and an impressive Rs 39.9 crore on Monday.

From August 8 to 11, ST buses ferried the safe travel of 1.93 crore passengers, including 88 lakh female passengers.

The transport minister expressed his gratitude to the commuters for the massive response during Rakshabandhan. He also commended the dedicated ST staff who, despite being away from their own families during the festival, worked tirelessly and contributed to this record-breaking revenue.
