The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an orange alert for Pune, Satara, Sangli and several other parts of Maharashtra, predicting 'heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning on May 20.
In its weather bulletin, the IMD said that heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) at isolated places were very likely on Tuesday in parts of Maharashtra.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for Pune, Ghats of Pune, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Latur and Dharashiv districts of Maharashtra.
A nowcast warning issued by the IMD Mumbai at 4:30 pm on May 20, "Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg during next 3-4 hours."
A similar weather alert was issued for other parts of Maharashtra. The nowcast warning said, "Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Pune, Ahmednagar, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, Osmanabad, Latur, Nanded, Aurangabad, Raigad during next 3-4 hours."
A separate weather alert said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and light spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Thane, Nashik, Jalna, Beed, Hingoli, Parbhani and Mumbai during next 3-4 hours.
"Take precautions while moving out," the IMD Mumbai advised citizens.
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around May 21.
Shubhangi Bhute from IMD Mumbai said, "The system could impact weather across Maharashtra, particularly in South Konkan and Mumbai, between May 21 and 24. Heavy rain, stormy conditions and gusty winds are expected during this period. Residents and commuters are advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions."
Meanwhile, the weather department has also issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between May 20 and 24. In its latest weather forecast, IMD has stated that MMR is likely to experience thunderstorms, followed by lightning and moderate rainfall along with gusty winds at a speed of 40 to 50 km/hr in isolated regions.
