Just a day after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray imposed restrictions across the state in view of the rising COVID-19 cases, Palghar district collector Dr. Manik Gursale raided three marriage functions late on Sunday night and found more than 800 people celebrating, drinking alcohol and dancing without following any social distancing rules. Most of them were even found without masks. Cases have also been registered against a number of people, but they are yet to be arrested.

The three marriage functions were taking place at Satpati, Shirgaon and Umroli-Birwadi late on Sunday night. Speaking to mid-day, Palghar district collector Dr. Manik Gursale said, “We have registered cases against Umesh Patil, Kundan Mahatre, Deepak Jadhav, Chandrakant Tandel, Tushar Thakur and Chandrakant Thakur under section 188 (disobedience) of IPC, Epidemic Diseases Act 1987 and Disaster Management Act 2005.
“We have given permission for only 50 guests. They were not following any rules, including social distancing and wearing masks. They were dancing freely without any fear. Cases have been registered at Satpati and Boisar police stations. The functions were planned just a few days ago so we did not stop them but they were supposed to follow rules. Many of the guests were also drinking alcohol. Cases have been registered against the fathers of the three grooms, disc jockey, caterer, hall owner and others.”
Vasai-Virar restrictions
In Vasai-Virar area all schools having Std V-IX will be closed till February 24. The cops are collecting a fine of R200 from people found without masks. Bars, restaurants and other eateries in the area are allowed to remain open from 7 am to 11 pm till February 24.
