There is good news for motorists travelling to Panvel and Pune via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). A proposed connector of the bridge, which will link Chirle to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, has been given the green signal. The close-to-Rs 1,000-crore project comprises two six-lane elevated roads. One will link Chirle to Gavhan phata while the other will connect Palaspe to the expressway.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee posted a message on social media that read, “The project of MTHL connector connecting MTHL at Chirle to Mumbai-Pune Expressway at Palaspe is now approved and work is expected to start soon (sic).”

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning a six-lane elevated connector linking the MTHL with the JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) Highway. The connector will have an interchange at Chirle and up-down ramps at Gavhan phata.
As a part of the project, widening of existing NH48 to six lanes will be done and an interchange will be created near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
In March 2023, the MMRDA invited tenders to construct an elevated corridor from the JNPT exit at Panvel’s Kon village to the Chirle interchange off Ulwe, a distance of 7.35 km. Once constructed, this crucial elevated corridor will help in road connectivity between NH348 and NH48.
The project will take around 30 months to be completed. Once ready, this crucial connector will benefit the motorists headed towards Lonavala and Pune from south Mumbai as they will no longer have to travel by the busy Sion-Panvel highway or cross the Vashi toll plaza before getting on to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
The MTHL, the longest sea bridge in the country, was recently opened and it has brought Mumbai closer to Panvel, JNPT and Navi Mumbai.
One of the key advantages of the MTHL project is its ability to provide faster connectivity to various important locations, including the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport, JNPT, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa Highway.
