The Esplanade Court at CSMT has repeatedly requested Cama Hospital to provide on-site medical facilities for court staff and judges. The demand intensified after advocate Malti Pawar collapsed and died in the court following a cardiac arrest on October 31. In response, Cama Hospital wrote to the court stating that it could not provide regular medical services due to a shortage of doctors.
On Tuesday, court manager Sunil Patole met Cama Hospital Dean Dr Tushar Palve to again request emergency medical support for the Esplanade Court. Dr Palve told mid-day that hospital staff would be prepared to rush to the court if an emergency arises. He said first aid would be provided on-site and the patient would be shifted to the hospital as required.
Patole said, “We wrote several letters to Cama Hospital requesting medical facilities, but they replied saying they do not have sufficient staff. On Tuesday, we met Dr Palve to insist on emergency services at the court. They have now assured us of support.” Dr Palve said that providing medical facilities to courts is mandatory as per Supreme Court directions, but the responsibility lies with the Directorate of Health Services and the BMC, neither of which has provided the required infrastructure at the Esplanade Court.
“On Tuesday, we met the court manager and informed him that we are ready to provide emergency medical services. We shared hospital contact numbers, and I gave my personal number as well. If any emergency arises, the court manager will inform us, and we will send a doctor immediately. The doctor will provide first aid and shift the patient as needed. Our priority is to ensure immediate care,” Dr Palve said.
Advocate Sunil Pandey, who wrote to the health minister after advocate Malti Pawar’s death, also met Dr Palve on Tuesday, along with court manager Patole. Pandey said, “There is an urgent need for better health infrastructure and emergency protocols for advocates. Regular follow-ups have helped secure this progress, but it required sustained effort to push for these essential services. The Cama Hospital administration has assured us of medical support and continued care for court staff and advocates.”
