Even after extending the benefits under Abhay Yojna, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has managed to recover only seven per cent of the pending Rs 2,819 crore water bills for April-December 2020. Hence, the civic body has decided to give more concessions under the scheme so that people make the payments.
Under the Abhay Yojna, the BMC waives the penalty of 2 per cent levied on water bills if consumers pay the entire amount of all the pending bills at one go. Though the corporation received a good response in the earlier years, the recovery percentage is negligible for last year.
In 2010-11, the BMC recovered 31 per cent of the total pending bills and in 2011-12 the recovery percentage was 21 per cent. But from April to December last year, the civic body has managed to recover only 7 per cent of the pending amount.
