If all goes well, you may soon get a chance to travel in closed-door local trains. Close on the heels of Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda&rsquo;s announcement and visits made to the city by chairman of the Railway Board, railway authorities are keeping busy as they work towards making automatic sliding doors (ASD) local trains a reality in the city.

The doors have been designed to provide proper ventilation to passengers, even if the trains are not air-conditioned ones. According to senior Railway officials in the Western Railway (WR), they are designing doors that will make train travel comfortable for passengers.
&ldquo;We are keeping in mind the comfort of the passengers. If we will install doors in non-AC trains, there would be a lack of ventilation, leading to suffocation. To avoid that, we are designing doors through which air can pass,&rdquo; said a senior official from WR.
The final design for the door, which could be finalised any day now, will have upper openings, as well as perforations near the bottom, to facilitate ventilation. A trial run is being planned on a ladies compartment. &ldquo;If the trial run is successful, we will start installing doors on other trains as well,&rdquo; added the official.
The Railway Board has given the WR authorities three months in which to conduct the trial run, of which a month has already passed. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s not easy for us to implement this immediately. Building a new coach with closed doors is easier than modifying existing rakes,&rdquo; said the official. Sharat Chandrayan, chief PRO, WR, said, &ldquo;Preparations are on for automatic sliding doors in local trains.&rdquo;

Officials have been asked to conduct a trial run soon, and are in the process of finalising designs for a door that will allow for ventilation in the coaches
