On Wednesday, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to start the handover of the keys of 556 completed housing units in the redeveloped BDD chawls at Worli to their allotted beneficiaries ahead of the upcoming Ganesh festival.
In his letter, Thackeray pointed out that under Phase-1 of the BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project, 1,595 houses have been fully constructed in his Worli constituency. Of these, 556 units have already been allotted through a lottery system and are ready for immediate occupation. He requested that the keys be handed over without delay so that families can celebrate Ganeshotsav in their new homes.

“This would allow beneficiaries to move in and settle down in time for the festival. Otherwise, how long will they continue living in transit accommodations or rented homes when their new homes are ready?” Thackeray questioned in the letter. He attributed the delay to pending formalities with the transit company, despite the readiness of the new housing units.
Thackeray also emphasised the practical impact of the move, saying that once these tenants vacate transit accommodations, those spaces can be made available to others, thereby speeding up the overall redevelopment process.
Calling for a formal key distribution ceremony, he added, “The project can progress smoothly if these beneficiaries are allowed to move in now.” Representing the Worli assembly constituency, which has multiple BDD chawls under redevelopment, Thackeray underscored the emotional and cultural significance of allowing families to begin a new chapter in their lives during Ganeshotsav.
Aaditya Thackeray: 80 per cent of Dharavi families may lose rehab rights, pushed to dumpyard
Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MLA Aaditya Thackeray visited Kumbharwada in Mumbai's Dharavi and raised strong concerns over the eligibility criteria under the Dharavi Redevelopment Plan.
In a detailed post on X, Thackeray highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Kumbharwada, calling it “not just a slum but a village of potters,” where families have lived for over four to five generations since the 1880s.
Criticising the new guidelines under the redevelopment scheme, he alleged that nearly 80 per cent of the families now face disqualification from receiving rehabilitation homes in Dharavi. “Families will be broken apart, siblings living in the same informal home will be declared ineligible, and some structures—if not six feet in height from a certain base—will be dismissed altogether,” he said.
