Mumbai police has retrieved Rs 20 lakh that had been stolen during a recent break-in at a private firm in Colaba and solved the case with the arrest of an ex-employee of the company, Harshad Chavan, and his relative Asim Chavan.
The duo has reportedly confessed to the crime and is currently in police custody.
On July 15, Vilas Keluskar, the director of the company, filed a complaint at Colaba Police Station that Rs 20.25 lakh had been stolen from his office safe. Keluskar, who&rsquo;s a Mahim resident, told the police that only money had been stolen.
Police investigation then concluded that it was an insider&rsquo;s job. The police were able to narrow it down to the two accused as the same day Harshad had handed in his resignation.
Senior police inspector Vinay Gidhdgir, Colaba police station, said, &ldquo;We spent two days observing the CCTV cameras in the office when we saw Harshad Chavan pretending to return the keys after handing in his resignation to his employer. Arshad, though, kept the keys of the office and handed them over to his relative Asim who then broke into the office at night when the cameras prepared to steal Rs 25 lakh that was to be used to pay the family&rsquo;s debt.&rdquo; The inspector also added that the two accused were well aware of where the money was kept and how to gain access to the safe.
Mumbai Commissioner Rakesh Maria has commended the Colaba Police for their swift and systematic recovery of the stolen money.
