Mumbai Rains: Lake water stock drops to 10.72 per cent still higher than 2024 levels

Mumbai rains: The seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai had a water stock of 10.72 per cent, or 1,55,125 million litres, as of June 8, as against 11.06 per cent recorded on Saturday morning.

The seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai had a water stock of 10.72 per cent, or 1,55,125 million litres, as of June 8, as against 11.06 per cent recorded on Saturday morning. At full capacity, the lakes hold a cumulative water content of 14,47,363 million litres. The catchment area of these lakes received a cumulative of 34 mm of rainfall on Saturday, till Sunday morning.

However, the water stock this year is still higher as compared to the water levels in these lakes on the same day in 2024, when it was recorded at 6.13 per cent, or 88,679 million litres. On the same day in 2023, the lakes held 10.90 per cent of water capacity.


The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) supplies 3950 million litres of drinking water to the city every day, from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi lakes.


According to information from the BMC, the Lower (Modak Sagar), Middle and Upper Vaitarna lakes, along with the Tansa lake supply water to the western suburbs, from Dahisar Check Naka to Bandra, and to the western part of the city from Mahim to Malabar Hill. 

Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi lakes constitute the Bhatsa system. Its water is purified at the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant and supplied to the eastern parts of the city and the eastern suburbs, ranging from Mulund Check Naka to Sion, and from Sion to Mazagaon.

The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) daily bulletin on Sunday indicated light to moderate rain along with thundershowers for Mumbai, on Sunday and Monday. No alerts have been indicated for the city.
