A refusal to give an alcoholic beverage parcel allegedly triggered a violent rampage at a toddy shop in Mankhurd, where a group dominated by juveniles barged into the premises, vandalised the counter, assaulted the shop owner and his worker, and fled with cash, police said.
According to police, the incident occurred around 5.45 pm on December 12 at ‘Sai Toddy Madi Centre’ at Ekta Nagar in Mandala, Mankhurd. The complainant, shop owner Srinivas Mallesh Gadarla, 57, told police that one of the accused had demanded a toddy parcel, which he refused to give. Minutes later, the accused allegedly returned with his associates.
The police said the group was allegedly led by a 38-year-old man, accompanied by his son and others, including an 18-year-old, while several others involved were juveniles in conflict with law. The accused allegedly forced their way into the shop, shoved the counter, damaged property and began hurling glasses towards customers, creating panic.
When Gadarla and his worker, Narendra Kumar Ram, tried to intervene, they allegedly threatened them, abused them, and assaulted them. The police said Gadarla was allegedly struck on the head with a steel plate, and he and his worker were beaten up and kicked. The accused also allegedly threatened to shut down the business and warned bystanders not to intervene. Gadarla sustained injuries and was taken to Shatabdi Hospital, where he was treated in the Outpatient Department, the police said.
During the attack, the accused allegedly forced open the shop’s cash counter and fled with Rs 5500, which has since been recovered. The steel plate allegedly used in the assault has not yet been seized. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case on December 13 and arrested two of the accused adults the same day. Three juveniles — aged between 16 and 17 years — were sent to an observation home in Dongri, in accordance with juvenile justice procedures.
