Traffic cops clear aggregate cabs and other vehicles blocking internal roads; according to information from the Mumbai traffic police, action was taken against at least 45 vehicles belonging to aggregate cab services on Saturday and Sunday
Road No. 18 outside Jain Society, Sion, had 60 per cent fewer aggregate cabs parked on Monday
Following mid-day's report on Saturday about the residents of Sion’s Jain Society raising concerns about the unauthorised parking of aggregate cabs in their lanes, the Mumbai traffic police cracked down on cabs parked in three lanes over the weekend. According to information from the Mumbai traffic police, action was taken against at least 45 vehicles belonging to aggregate cab services on Saturday and Sunday, and a consolidated fine amount of a little over Rs 30,000 was collected from the locality, against unauthorised on-street parking.
The traffic police also cleared three trucks and tempos parked in the locality for loading and unloading of grocery items over the weekend. In addition, the traffic police towed one truck on Monday and fined 15 other vehicles, collecting Rs 10,000 in fines. The traffic police decided to implement new rules this week: to allow only residents of the locality to park on one side of the road, to stop double-lane parking from outsiders, and to impose a fine of Rs 500 to Rs 1500 for unauthorised on-street parking by repeat offenders.

A senior traffic police official of the Matunga traffic division told mid-day on Sunday evening: “The traffic police conducted a survey of the area on Saturday and took action against aggregate cab drivers. We spoke to the residents of the area who gathered there during the crackdown, and informed them that parking on both sides of the road should be avoided. Residents who do not have parking facilities in their housing societies can park on any one side of the road. This will also free up the lane for traffic.”
On Saturday, mid-day reported about residential buildings in Jain Society, Sion, facing issues due to unauthorised parking of aggregate cabs in their quiet internal lanes — 24B, 25, and 80 — throughout the day and overnight as well. Several vehicles are abandoned for several days at length, and have punctured tyres and rusting windshields. The residents had urged the traffic police to come up with a permanent solution to the problem.
A senior official from the Matunga traffic division confirmed that, according to the rules of the Mumbai traffic police, parking in the carriageway of any road is not allowed. In principle, residents of any area who own vehicles should be able to park in their own area, or the vicinity of their house.
A representative of the residents association from Sion’s Jain Society, named ‘Citizens group of the road of 24B Jain Society, Sion’, said on Monday evening, “There is a 60 per cent reduction in on-street parking of aggregate cabs due to action by the traffic police. We also met the authorities on Monday morning, requesting continued action.”
