After four long years, Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), which spans 106.95 sq. km in the heart of Mumbai, is set to revive a timeless treasure—the iconic Mini Toy Train, fondly known as “Van Rani” (Queen of the Jungle).

Established in 1974 and a cherished memory for generations, the Mini Train has brought joy to countless children and nature lovers over the past 50 years.

The toy train, which once carried thousands of smiling children and nature lovers on a scenic route through the park, was forced to shut down in 2021 after Cyclone Tauktae caused severe damage to the tracks and infrastructure. Now, the heritage ride is being restored and reimagined with fresh upgrades and renewed energy.

The redevelopment of Van Rani was undertaken under the guidance of Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, who visited the site twice and directed officials from the Ministry of Railways to accelerate the project. With crucial support from Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, the work has progressed swiftly and is nearing completion within its scheduled deadline. Moreover, the project is almost completed within the stipulated time.

Here is what makes the Van Rani 2.0 more exciting

Overhaul: The 2.3-km route has undergone a complete overhaul. All 15 bridges have been reconstructed, ensuring a safer and smoother ride. Also, one brand-new toy train unit has already arrived, with trial runs underway since June 30, 2025. A full-capacity trial run was successfully conducted on July 5.

Upgraded Stations: Krishnagiri Station has been upgraded with better buildings, platforms, and accessibility ramps. The final touches at the Krishnagiri Station are in progress. On the other hand, the Teenmurthy Station’s platform redevelopment is also completed and the station shed will be ready by July 25.

New Attractions: The revamped train will feature educational panels on local wildlife, picturesque views of the Deer Park, a rich showcase of the park’s biodiversity, and an immersive experience of SGNP’s rich biodiversity.

This redevelopment of the Van Rani aims not only to restore a nostalgic gem but also to boost ecotourism and inspire young minds to connect with nature.

With Van Rani expected to be operational around July 2025, the forest department looks forward to welcoming visitors of every generation to experience this surreal ride through the wild once more.
