Mumbai woke up on Thursday to an unexpectedly crisp and pleasantly cool morning, offering residents a refreshing break from the city’s usual warm and humid climate.
Early commuters were greeted by clear skies, light winds and a mild nip in the air — a combination that briefly made the city feel closer to winter than its typical coastal warmth. According to early readings, minimum temperatures dipped below 20 degrees Celsius during the pre-dawn hours, contributing to what many described as one of the season’s most comfortable mornings so far.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that the city may continue to witness slight dips in temperature over the next 24 hours. As per the forecast, Mumbai is likely to see clear skies throughout the day, with daytime temperatures reaching around 33–34 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is expected to hover near 17°C, particularly in the northern suburbs, which often experience cooler conditions compared to South Mumbai.
However, Thursday’s pleasant weather was accompanied by a familiar drawback — a thin but persistent layer of smog that settled over the skyline. Residents reported reduced visibility in several areas as the haze blurred building outlines and softened the horizon. Though the morning breeze added a sense of comfort, it was not strong enough to disperse pollutants significantly, muting the otherwise picturesque early winter-like ambience.
Data from the IMD observatories highlighted distinct variations across the city. In Colaba, the minimum temperature was recorded at 22 degrees Celsius with relative humidity touching 70 per cent. Meanwhile, the Santacruz observatory registered a much cooler minimum of 17.2 degrees Celsius and humidity levels around 56 per cent, reflecting the typical microclimatic differences between South Mumbai and the suburbs.
Air quality continues to remain a major concern despite the dip in temperatures. The Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app reported Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) in the ‘moderate’ category, measuring 143 on Thursday morning. The haze observed across the city and suburbs once again underscored the growing challenge of deteriorating air quality during the winter months. Although the mist gradually lifted as the day progressed, experts caution that pollutants are likely to linger due to calm winds and stable atmospheric conditions.
With clear skies expected to continue and no major weather systems influencing the region, residents can anticipate relatively pleasant mornings in the coming days — though the city’s air quality remains an issue that will require close monitoring.
