In a move to boost the carrying capacity and ease overcrowding for daily commuters on the Mumbai suburban network, the Western Railway (WR) has decided to augment 16 existing 12-car suburban services into 15-car trains with effect from Thursday, March 19.
According to a press release issued by Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek, this augmentation will increase the total number of 15-car services from 211 to 227. The total number of suburban services on Western Railway will remain unchanged at 1,414. Out of the 16 augmented services, eight will operate during peak hours (four each in the morning and evening).
The decision aims to provide a more comfortable commuting experience by addressing the growing passenger demand on the busy Mumbai local train network, often referred to as the city's lifeline.
"This initiative reflects Western Railway’s continued commitment towards providing efficient, safe and passenger-friendly services," the release stated.
The detailed list of the 16 services being augmented is provided in Annexure-I, covering various timings and routes such as Churchgate (CCG) to Virar (VR), Nallasopara (NSP) to CCG, Borivali (BVI) to CCG, and others.
This step comes amid ongoing efforts to modernise and expand Mumbai's suburban rail infrastructure, including the induction of new rakes and platform extensions at select stations to support longer trains.
Western Railway has appealed to commuters to check the updated timetable on its website or through official apps for any minor adjustments in stoppages or timings.
