A golden jackal was crushed to death by an unidentified speeding vehicle around midnight on Sunday on the service road near DPS Flamingo Lake, Nerul in Navi Mumbai.
An unidentified four-wheeler hit the jackal on its back, fatally crushing it, a volunteer of the Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) said. He received the distress call around 12 midnight.
Environmentalists have expressed shock at the incident and called for strict measures to prevent such occurrences.
B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Foundation, called for a complete halt to any further real estate development in the area to protect mangrove-wetland wildlife.
DPS Flamingo Lake and the surrounding mangroves were recently declared a conservation reserve, and the area around it must be left undisturbed for wildlife, he said.
A variety of native and migratory birds, jackals, and reptiles inhabit the mangrove-wetland zone, Kumar added.
Sandeep Sareen of Navi Mumbai Environment Preservation Society (NMEPS) said speeding vehicles on the service road parallel to Palm Beach Road have become a major hazard.
He demanded immediate enforcement of speed restrictions on the service road. Many motorists divert from Palm Beach Road to avoid signals, and rash driving is rampant, Sareen noted.
The ongoing construction activity and CIDCO’s plans to lease plots in the area threaten the region’s biodiversity, he added.
Environmentalist Jyoti Nadkarni said golden jackals have fallen victim to hit-and-run incidents in both Nerul and Kharghar.
Activists have called for creating a corridor to protect jackals and confine them to their natural habitat.
