Inclusive education, what's that? A month after a student with learning disability was denied admission into KC College because she gave her class 12 exams through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Dadar-based Kirti College has meted out the same behaviour to Harsh Shinde, another NIOS student with a learning disability.
Harsh scored 53 per cent in his class 12 exams and was allotted a seat in BA at Kirti College, through the MU's online admission process.
Fees paid However, his father Sunil - who made frequent visits to the college over almost 20 days - was in for a rude shock on Wednesday, when he was told that his son wouldn't be admitted to the college, because he is from NIOS. Sunil has alleged he also paid Rs 5,300 in fees to the college on the first day after Harsh's seat was allotted, but since then the college staff has not accepted his admission form.
"This is bizarre. The college is not doing us any favour; my son has acquired a seat on his own merit. They are not even letting any parent meet the principal," said Sunil, who is a school teacher. When asked about the fees, Sunil presented an online payment receipt and said: "I kept following the steps told by the staff. Since Harsh was allotted a seat, we never thought that the admission wouldn't take place."
No clear policy Dr VN Magare, principal of Kirti College said, "Even though candidates have been allotted seat through university's registration process, a college has to verify original documents as well as the candidate's eligibility before confirming the admission. MU has no clear policy regarding NIOS candidates. While it allows NIOS candidates, their documents are sometimes sent back when they come to the varsity for enrolment. In such cases, the student has already spent some time in college. How can any college then ask the child to go? Hence, it has been decided to not accept applications from NIOS candidates." When told about how Shinde has already paid fees, a shocked Dr. Magare said, "I will have to verify if that has really happened. I will enquire further regarding this."
Can't discriminate A senior official from MU's eligibility and enrolment section, said, "There cannot be any discrimination of such kind as all admissions are done on merit, irrespective of boards. But if there is a gap in the education of the specific student, then it has to be looked into."
