Thane, Bhiwandi, Palghar and Raigad district in Maharashtra on Monday announced a holiday for all schools on August 19 due to heavy rainfall and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

An official notification by the Thane Municipal Corporation said that the decision applies to all types of schools under every management and medium -- including pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher secondary -- whether they are government-aided or unaided, and private institutions.

"The announcement was made to ensure the safety of students during the extreme weather conditions affecting Thane city. The Thane Municipal Commissioner issued the directive after reviewing alerts from the State Emergency Centre and the Regional Meteorological Centre in Colaba, Mumbai," officials said.

They said that the school authorities have been instructed to make sure that students attending afternoon sessions on Monday are sent home safely. Teachers and staff have been asked to stay at the school premises until all children have safely reached home.

Any scheduled training programmes, exams, or school activities planned for August 18 and 19 should be rescheduled and completed later as per school-level planning. All students and parents must be informed immediately of the school closure through appropriate channels, the notification said.

In an official notification, the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation said that due to continuous heavy rainfall and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, a holiday has been declared for all schools on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, as a safety measure for students.

This applies to all types of schools across all mediums and managements within the Bhiwandi Municipal area -- including pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, whether private aided or unaided.

The decision was made in light of the worsening weather conditions and to ensure that students are not exposed to any risk during travel. The order was issued with the approval of the Administrator and Municipal Commissioner, it said.

A similar notification, declaring holiday for schools, was issued by civic authorities in Palghar and Raigad districts of Maharashtra.

According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), heavy rains continued in Thane district of Maharashtra on Monday, with the city recording over 100 mm of rainfall in just 8 hours, the civic officials said.

"Thane received 100. 31 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm," the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said on Monday.

Rainfall was heaviest between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm, with 27.44 mm recorded between 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm alone, officials said.

With Monday’s rain, the total rainfall this monsoon season has reached 2,016.81 mm, edging closer to last year's total of 2,517.89 mm.
