The Maharashtra government on Thursday acknowledged in the Legislative Assembly that dues amounting to over Rs 10,900 crore are pending with various state departments payable to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The issue was raised during the ongoing Budget Session through a starred question by MLAs including Bhaskar Jadhav, Siddharth Kharat, Manoj Jamsutkar, Ajay Chaudhary, Vishwajit Kadam, Vijay Wadettiwar, Nanabhau Patole, Aslam Shaikh, Amin Patel, Jyoti Gaikwad, Amit Deshmukh, Hemant Ogale, Sanjay Meshram, Atul Bhatkhalkar, Sanjay Derkar, Rahul Patil, and Harish Pimpale, among others.

Over Rs 10,900 crore pending across departments

The legislators sought clarification on whether multiple state government departments—including Urban Development, Education, Home, Public Health, Public Works, and Irrigation—owed substantial dues to the BMC in the form of property taxes, water charges, and grants.

Responding to the query, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that as of December 31, 2025, a total of Rs 10,931 crore remains outstanding with various state government departments.

BMC sought payment through official communication

The Assembly was informed that the Municipal Commissioner of the BMC had written to the concerned departments on December 9, 2025, urging them to clear the pending dues at the earliest.

Members had also questioned whether similar correspondence in the past had failed to yield results, leading to continued delays in payments.

Follow-ups underway, no detailed reasons cited

In his response, Shinde stated that the BMC is continuously following up with the respective departments to recover the pending amounts.

However, the government did not elaborate on specific reasons for the accumulation of such large-scale dues or provide a clear timeline for their clearance.

The issue of delayed payments is significant, as the pending funds relate to key civic revenue streams and could impact the financial planning and execution of infrastructure and public service projects in Mumbai.

Sharp decline in BEST buses sparks debate in Maharashtra Assembly

Meanwhile, concerns over the dwindling number of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking’s own buses were raised in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during the ongoing Budget Session on Thursday, with members questioning the sustainability of the city’s public transport system.
