The Lok Adalat in Maharashtra’s Thane district settled 3,07,255 cases in 2025 and awarded compensation amounting to Rs 754.85 crore, news agency PTI reported, quoting an official on Thursday.
Lok Adalats function as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism, offering a faster and cost-effective way to settle disputes, both those pending in courts and matters at the pre-litigation stage, through conciliation and compromise. Awards passed by Lok Adalats carry the same legal status as decrees of a civil court.
“To settle over Rs 754 crore in a single year proves that the Lok Adalat is no longer just an alternative; it has become a cornerstone of our judicial system,” said RS Pajankar, secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).
According to Pajankar, financial and recovery-related matters dominated the settlements, including bank recovery cases, cheque bounce disputes, and claims under the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).
“In matters such as bank recoveries and MACT cases, time is of the essence. By facilitating compensation of Rs 117 crore for accident victims and nearly Rs 166 crore for the banking sector, we are ensuring that relief and capital flow back into society and the economy without the traditional years-long wait,” he said.
Emphasising the scale of the exercise, Pajankar added that volume was as crucial as monetary value.
“When we clear over 1.2 lakh revenue matters or thousands of utility-related disputes, we remove countless minor stressors from citizens’ lives. Every settled bill or corrected revenue entry is one less person waiting in a court corridor," stated Pajankar.
Among the total 3,07,255 cases resolved in 2025, 282 marital disputes were also settled amicably, he added.
Thane MACT directs MSRTC to pay Rs 36.31 lakh to family of accident victim
Earlier this week, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane directed the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to pay ₹36.31 lakh in compensation to the family of a man who died following a collision between his motorcycle and an ST bus in 2020, news agency PTI reported.
In an order passed on January 1, Thane MACT member R. V. Mohite held that while the MSRTC bus driver was primarily responsible for the accident, the deceased had also contributed to the collision.
The incident occurred on December 9, 2020, on the Kalyan–Murbad road. Subhash Mahadu Shinde, 44, was riding his motorcycle when an ST bus travelling in the opposite direction collided head-on with his two-wheeler, PTI reported.
