In a major breakthrough, Thane Police have registered a case against a man for allegedly stealing electricity valued at Rs 4.19 lakh, officials said on Monday, October 13.

As reported by news agency PTI, the private power-supplying company's vigilance team carried out an inspection of the accused's premises at Kausa in the Mumbra area on October 10. During the investigation the officials discovered a theft, and further proceedings were done in accordance with the law, as per the officials.

Addressing the power theft, one of the officials from the Mumbra police station said that, “The 38-year-old resident is suspected of having illegally drawn electricity for nearly a year by bypassing the power meter, resulting in theft of 18,214 units of power valued at Rs 4,19,552,” as cited by news agency PTI.

The official further said that, "Based on the power company's complaint, a case has been registered against the resident under the Indian Electricity Act. No arrest has been made so far, and further investigation is underway," cited by PTI.

Man arrested in mephedrone seizure case in Thane

Earlier in September, the crime branch arrested the accused, Kuldeepsingh Parihar, on September 12 from the Kalwa area. After arresting the accused, a search warrant was launched for his absconding associate.

The official had said that the police in Maharashtra's Thane district have arrested one more person in connection with the seizure of mephedrone worth Rs 75.2 lakh smuggled through the Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh border, reported news agency PTI.

Senior inspector Sachin Gaikwad, addressing the mephedrone case, said that the crime branch had earlier seized 501.5 gm of mephedrone from a car at the Kharigaon toll naka on September 9 and arrested the driver, Sureshsingh Gangasingh Tanwar (35), who hailed from Ratlam in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, reported PTI.

A case under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered, and during interrogation, Tanwar revealed that he had smuggled the contraband with the help of his associates, Kuldeepsingh Parihar and Abhishek Jaiswal, he said, reported PTI.

Along with Tanwar, three accused were arrested in Vasai with mephedrone worth Rs 50 lakh.

Police officials further said that the narcotics were transported across the Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh border for illegal trade and sale in Maharashtra.
