Two newspaper vendors&mdash; an uncle-nephew duo &mdash; were out on a bike doing their job yesterday morning when a speeding car ran them over in Naupada. While the 24-year-old nephew succumbed to the injuries, the uncle (46) is seriously injured.

The cops have registered a case of rash driving against the accused, who had fled the scene. The police, during investigation, found that the accused is the son of one Arvind Itadkar, engineer with Thane Municipal Corporation in the Kalwa ward office. The victims identified as Sachin Pawar, the nephew, and Hemant Jadhav were distributing newspapers on their auto gear bike and were going towards Talao Pali from Ram Maruti Road. &ldquo;The accused identified as Shekar Arvind Itadkar was driving his Hyundai Verna (MH 04 FN 3330) from Gajanan Chowk to New English School, when he hit the duo on the two wheeler,&rdquo; said a Naupada police officer.

Pawar was the only earning member of his family. The accused fled the spot and a passer-by informed the cops. &ldquo;When our officers visited the spot we found the duo lying in a pool of blood and newspapers all over the road. Both were immediately shifted to Jupiter Hospital, where Pawar died due to a head injury. Jadhav was shifted to another hospital where he is undergoing treatment. He has suffered head and back injuries,&rdquo; said a police officer.
MB Thorve, Police Inspector, Naupada police station, told mid-day, &ldquo;A witness claimed that the car was speeding and when the accused saw the crowd gathering, he ran away. Residents have given us the car&rsquo;s number. We have registered a case against him and are trying to trace him.&rdquo; Police sources said the accused has been identified as Shekhar. The Naupada police have registered a case on against the accused under Sections 304 (a), 337 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and different sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.
