Mumbai woke up to a chilly surprise on Wednesday, experiencing its coldest November morning in over a decade.
The temperature at the Santacruz observatory dipped to 16.2°Celsius, a significant drop of at least 5°C below the usual minimum for this time of year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marked the coldest night of the season yet, beating the previous low recorded earlier in the week. On Tuesday, the minimum temperatures dropped to 17.4°C.
This unexpected chill is part of a broader weather shift affecting the region, signalling a shift toward colder days ahead.
As per the IMD, several regions in the state also logged single-digit minimum temperatures. The sudden fall in temperatures across Maharashtra marks the strongest winter spell so far this season.
The drop in temperature marked one of the coldest November mornings in the past 11 years. Many residents reported feeling the abrupt chill early in the morning, as cooler northerly winds swept into the region.
The last time the city experienced minimum temperatures close to this was in 2024 (November 29), when the mercury dipped to 16.5°C.
At the Colaba observatory, the minimum temperature was 21.6 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity at 65 per cent.
The city’s overall air quality continued to deteriorate. According to the Air Quality Index website, the overall AQI hovered around 173 at 12:35 pm, a figure that is 'unhealthy' with pockets such as Mazagaon, Malad and Sewri, slipping into the poor range.
In Pune, the minimum temperature dropped to 9.5°C on Wednesday, accompanied by a high relative humidity level of 91 per cent, adding to the overall chill in the state.
Apart from Mumbai and Pune, Nashik logged a minimum temperature of 9.7 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity at 72 per cent.
IMD officials added that the Malegaon station also saw a sharp dip, recording a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius, with humidity at 80 per cent.
In Baramati, the early morning minimum stood at 9.5 degrees Celsius, making conditions noticeably cooler. IMD also stated that the relative humidity in the district was recorded at 65 per cent.
The lowest temperature among the reported locations came from Jeur, which registered a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius during the early hours of Wednesday. Relative humidity was recorded at 56 per cent.

In Ahilyanagar, temperatures dipped significantly, touching 8.5 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was 75 per cent, rainfall was nil, and SRF was 84.4 mm, as per IMD.
The IMD further noted that Mumbai, Pune and several other districts of Maharashtra are witnessing a steady winter onset.
The North Maharashtra and Marathwada regions towards the end of November are now emerging as some of the coldest pockets. With clear skies, dry air and calm winds expected to intensify in the coming days, temperatures across the state are likely to dip further.
