Western Railway (WR) authorities are all set to procure 104 escalators and lifts for city and suburban stations, most of which are to be commissioned over the next two years by 2027. According to senior railway officials, the installations are spread across major and high-footfall stations, and include both, new foot overbridges (FOBs) and upgraded circulating areas.
The list includes multiple lifts and escalators at stations such as Grant Road, Jogeshwari, Borivli, Vasai Road, Vapi, Bhayandar, Andheri, Khar and Mumbai Central, among others. Several proposals have already been shortlisted, while others are under administrative and financial vetting at the headquarters level.
Railway officials said the initiative is aimed at improving passenger accessibility, especially for senior citizens, women, children and persons with disabilities, while easing congestion during peak hours. The phased commissioning is expected to align with the completion of new and upgraded FOBs across the suburban network.
