The ruling party workers and office bearers were led by BJP leaders Girish Palve and Mahesh Hire, Kailas Aahire and Chaya Devang who demanded an apology from Gandhi.
BJP Mumbai president and MLA Ashish Shelar told media on Friday that by commenting on the “surname Modi”, Rahul Gandhi insulted the OBC community. “We condemn him.," he said.
Demanding an apology from Gandhi, the BJP Mumbai chief said, Gandhi was convicted after following the constitutional procedures. The punishment is according to the democratic procedures. Rahul Gandhi defamed our country on a foreign land. This will not be accepted by the BJP. And hence Rahul Gandhi must apologize. We will not tolerate him defaming the OBC community.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and Rajhya Sabha Member, Kapil Sibal took a swipe at two BJP leaders, Dharmendra Pradhan and Anurag Thakur, for accusing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of insulting OBCs with his "Modi surname" remark in 2019, saying they were "insulting" people's intelligence by making such an "absurd allegation".
Rahul Gandhi was disqualified on Friday from the Lok Sabha following his conviction by a court in Gujarat. His disqualification triggered a massive political row with the BJP stating that the Congress leader was "a habitual loose cannon" and the Congress alleging that he was "deliberately disqualified"
