The Maharashtra government has imposed a four-day dry period across 29 municipal corporations going to polls, banning the sale and consumption of alcohol from January 13 to January 16 in preparation for civic elections. PIC/ SATEJ SHINDE
The dry period comes into effect once election campaigning ends on January 13. With the conclusion of political rallies and public campaigning, liquor restrictions will be strictly enforced in all poll-bound urban centres
Under the government order, all liquor shops, bars, permit rooms, and alcohol-selling establishments within the limits of the 29 municipal corporations will remain closed during this period
Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against any violations of the dry day rules and have urged citizens, voters, and business owners to cooperate
Security and monitoring have also been intensified in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents ahead of and during polling
Voting for the municipal corporation elections will take place on January 15 in major cities, including Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, with counting of votes scheduled for January 16. The government has increased police deployment and administrative oversight to ensure a smooth and peaceful election process
