Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Friday held a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar

Hundreds of people gathered near the Meenatai Thackeray statue at Shivaji Park in Dadar

CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka said: "If going to jail can bring back the votes of 13 crore people, and if going to jail can ensure accountability for Gyanesh Kumar

The protest, organised on Gandhi Jayanti, is part of the CJP's nationwide agitation over what the party alleges are irregularities in the Election Commission's functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has said the protest will continue until Kumar steps down. The party has also demanded a freeze on the SIR exercise and the use of the 2025 electoral rolls for election

The demonstration comes amid a wider political and civil-society debate over the revision of electoral rolls. Critics have raised concerns about the deletion of voters' names

The residents said Shivaji Park is not an open ground available for unrestricted public gatherings and that its non-sporting use is permitted only for specified events and subject to conditions. The government’s decision provides for an overall limit of 45 days a year for such use, the memorandum states

A wall of police barricades and the severe heat failed to dampen the energy at Shivaji Park on Friday, as wave upon wave of young protesters gathered for the Cockroach Janta Party's agitation, wielding placards with satirical memes and film dialogues to target Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

Despite opposition by residents of Shivaji Park and heavy security deployments extending up to Dadar station, protesters filled the locality with revolutionary slogans, Gandhian quotes, and signs calling for Kumar's immediate resignation

Waving tricolours alongside posters declaring "Gyanu, Tujha Democracy Var Bharosa Nay Kay?", "Gyanesh BRO, JUST RESIGN" and "Gaddaar Gyaanu Must Go", activists from groups such as Student Federation of India (SFI) and youngsters thronged the area

The protest evolved into a star-studded affair as veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, alongside filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Hansal Mehta, singer-music director Vishal Dadlani and Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, joined young agitators
