The compound wall of Kaka Chawl and parts of the adjoining Persian Apartment on Vallabhbhai Patel Road in Andheri (West) collapsed around 8.30 am on Monday amid heavy rain in Mumbai. No injuries were reported in the mishap.

A pit had been dug for laying the foundation plinth

Due to continuous rainfall, soil and debris in the area loosened and were washed away, causing the wall to collapse, authorities said

Local activist and Persian Apartment resident, Amjad Khan, alleged that the builder neglected the necessary precautions while digging the pit and failed to follow basic and standard construction safety norms

“The builder was supposed to maintain at least a 2-metre distance from the adjoining chawl and the building compound wall, but that was not done,” claimed Khan

Upon receiving information, the police, fire brigade, and officials from various departments rushed to the scene. However, no official statement has been issued yet regarding the steps to be taken next or accountability for the incident
