The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts

The metropolis, however, received moderate rainfall during 24 hours, ending at 8 am. The eastern suburbs recorded the highest average rainfall of 40.62 mm, followed by the island city at 26.03 mm and the western suburbs at 22.47 mm, officials said

The weather department issued yellow and orange alerts for several parts of Maharashtra. While issuing a yellow alert, it stated, "Heavy rainfall at a few places in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar was very likely on June 30"

An orange alert was issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Amravati, Gondia, Nagpur and Ghats of Kolhapur

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy monsoon showers continued across Navi Mumbai, Thane and ghats in Maharashtra on Tuesday, with Belapur recording the highest rainfall among Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) areas during the past 24 hours

According to the NMMC, the city recorded an average rainfall of 46.63 mm between 8.30 am on June 29 and 8.30 am on June 30

According to civic officials, traffic was slow on Mumbai roads and public transport services were running normally 

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s seven major lakes are currently holding 6.75 per cent of their useful live storage capacity as of 6 am on Tuesday, according to the daily water stock report issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)

The combined useful live storage across all reservoirs stands at 97,666 million litres (ML) against the total capacity of 14,47,363 ML. On the same date last year, the lakes had 40.22 per cent storage, while in 2024, levels were significantly lower at 5.46 per cent. Despite a year-on-year improvement, storage levels remain below normal as the monsoon has yet to set in

For the next 48 hours, IMD has predicted cloudy sky with heavy rain in city and suburbs. The rains are likely to intensify by night.
