The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a statewide crackdown to enforce school food safety regulations, bringing nearly 1.08 lakh schools and around 2 crore students under stricter nutrition and food safety norms

The sale, advertisement and free distribution of high-fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) food items is banned, the FDA chief said

Restaurants, sweet shops and other food outlets located within 50 metres of schools will also be inspected for compliance

The FDA clarified that enforcement extends beyond canteens. Schools have been advised against distributing or serving chocolates, samosas, vada pav and laddoos

Other deep-fried, sugary or trans-fat-rich foods during birthdays, Independence Day, Diwali and other celebrations

The FDA will conduct at least two inspections annually in every school to monitor compliance

The regulations apply to children from 22 months of age up to Class 12 students.
