Pathankot: Smoke could be seen coming out of the Indian Air Force (IAF) air base near here yesterday evening as the gunfight between security forces and terrorists moved to an end.

Police sources said two more terrorists holed up inside one portion of the frontline air base had been killed after a prolonged gun battle. With this, the security forces have eliminated six terrorists, the sources said. "The smoke can be seen coming from a building which was blown up by security forces to eliminate the last terrorist," a police officer said.
Timely action In New Delhi, Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said that the terrorists failed to destroy the IAF assets due to timely action by security forces. He said, "Because of early action, the terrorists were unable to move to their likely intended aim but were contained in an area of heavy growth of trees and shrubs."

He also said that the security forces had sounded an alert in the area, including the Indian Air Force base near Pathankot, ahead of the pre-dawn attack on Saturday. He said four terrorists were neutralized on Saturday after hours of fighting. According to him, the terrorists killed six IAF personnel and injured eight others. An NSG officer was killed yesterday morning and five of his colleagues were injured.
