Bootlegger dies in police custody

The Chaturshingi police station is under the scanner for the death of Laxmi Bai Dhaku Banawat (45), who died in police custody last night. Banawat was arrested by PSI Bhanudas Shinde for selling illegal country liquor at Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Pashan.

According to reports, Shinde was on the night patrol when he apprehended Banawat. She was arrested around 9.45 pm and brought in for questioning.

"At the station, she complained of chest pain and headache and was immediately rushed to Aundh hospital. The doctors declared her dead on arrival," said Shinde.

Shinde added, "When we took her to the hospital, her son Shiva told us that she had suffered two heart attacks in the past."u00a0

The case has been handed over to the CID Crime Branch, Pune. S A Muawar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, CID said, "We have just started with the investigation.u00a0 The doctors are being questioned. It's too early to comment on the cause of death."

The body has been sent for postmortem to Sassoon Hospital.
