The city may have just become safer for your car.

Bachan Singh, 20, alias Behra, a notorious car thief, carrying a reward of Rs 20,000, was arrested by the Special Operations Squad of the Crime Branch, Delhi police, on Monday.

Bachan had come near the NSIT gate at Dwarka at about 8 pm to meet his accomplice. He was apprehended with a loaded 7.65 mm pistol and a Santro car (DL-8CN-0766). However, taking advantage of the darkness, two of his associates escaped the cops.

Singh and his gang members have been involved in a number of carjacking cases in the last several months.

"Bachan started by selling liquor illegally and later kidnapped a girl from the Gulabi Bagh area in 2008, for which he was jailed. After coming out of jail, he formed a gang and started committing car robberies and motor-vehicle thefts since he found it to be more lucrative," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Neeraj Thakur.

Car care city?

In 2009, more than 27,000 cases of car thefts were reported. Police said there was a 25 per cent increase in the number of vehicle thefts, compared to 2008.

They said auto thefts constitute about 15 per cent of all crimes committed in Delhi. The figure also includes scooters and motorcycles.
