The Congress on Thursday claimed that a special session of Parliament is being considered next month to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. However it said this would be yet another classic exercise in "diversion and distraction" from more pressing issues by PM Modi.
Congress General Secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said that at a time when the BJP should be targeting Pakistan and terrorists for their actions, it is instead focused on attacking the Congress.
He further said that since the night of April 22, the Indian National Congress has been calling for an all-party meeting on the Pahalgam terror attack and its aftermath, to be chaired by PM Modi himself. That meeting has yet to take place, he noted.
Taking to his social media platform, X, Ramesh stated: "On May 10, both the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha wrote to the Prime Minister, requesting a special session of Parliament to demonstrate the nation's collective resolve through a resolution. The Prime Minister has NOT accepted that suggestion as well.”
He continued, saying: "Now it appears that a special session of Parliament is being considered for June 25–26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.”
However, there was no immediate response from the government or the BJP.
The Congress leader claimed, "This will be yet another classic exercise in diversion and distraction from real and urgent issues by the Prime Minister—the man who has placed the nation under an undeclared Emergency for 11 years, and the man who refuses to answer why the Pahalgam terrorists are still absconding, why he allowed President Trump to broker a ceasefire, and why he gave a clean chit to China publicly on June 19, 2020."
Later, speaking to PTI, Ramesh said that instead of addressing present-day issues and challenges, the government wants to discuss events from 50 years ago.
He also reiterated the Congress party’s demand for a special session and called for the February 1994 resolution on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to be reaffirmed in light of both India and Pakistan becoming nuclear powers and the new challenges that have emerged—particularly the "jugalbandi" between Pakistan and China.
Ramesh further questioned why the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack have not been caught.
“When they should be targeting Pakistan and terrorists, the BJP is only interested in targeting and attacking the Congress,” Ramesh said.
The Congress has also been pressing Prime Minister Modi to break his "silence" on the Trump administration’s repeated claims that it helped mediate the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
The US President has repeatedly claimed that he played a key role in settling tensions between India and Pakistan.
Following the deadly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, the Indian government responded with precision strikes under Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure. The operation aimed to destroy military bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In retaliation, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. Indian forces responded with a fierce counterattack on several Pakistani military installations.
After four days of intense cross-border shelling and missile strikes, India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the military confrontation.
On the same day, May 10, US President Donald Trump claimed that India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire following a long night of talks “mediated” by Washington.
