Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday visited the flood-affected areas of Punjab to assess the damage and review ongoing relief operations, reported the ANI.

In a post on X, the Congress Party stated that Rahul Gandhi met with families impacted by the severe flooding, particularly in Gurdaspur district, and took stock of the relief measures being carried out. He also engaged with farmers whose livelihoods were devastated by the deluge.

"Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met with the affected families in the flood-hit areas of Punjab and took stock of the relief efforts. The devastating floods in Punjab have ruined the lives of thousands of people. The state has suffered heavy losses in lives and property, and people are forced to live in relief camps," the party posted.

The Congress further appealed for unity and public support, urging everyone to contribute towards helping displaced families.

"The situation is extremely dire. In such difficult times, every Congress worker stands with Punjab. We appeal to all to provide every possible help to the flood-affected families. We must come together to overcome this disaster," the statement added.

During the visit, senior Congress leader Pargat Singh said that Rahul Gandhi “understands the pain of Punjab very well” and confirmed he would also be visiting Ajnala, where he planned to offer prayers at a gurdwara before interacting with local farmers and workers.

Singh also raised concerns about financial management, particularly questioning the utilisation of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) worth Rs 1,200 crore.

“No one is talking about how the Rs 1,200 crore SDRF fund was spent. We should be focusing on helping those who have lost everything,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu praised Rahul Gandhi’s visit, calling it a morale booster for Congress workers in Punjab.

“This is a huge motivation... He is our biggest leader, and he keeps encouraging us to continue doing 'sewa'. When someone of his stature notices your work, it pushes you to do more,” she said, according to the ANI.

However, she also criticised the ruling state government for poor disaster preparedness.

“Why did the government allow houses to be built near rivers? And those who released water suddenly should be held accountable,” she added.

According to the latest data, over 1.98 lakh hectares of crop land have been affected by the floods across Punjab. Major losses have been recorded in Gurdaspur (40,169 ha), Patiala (17,690 ha), Tarn Taran (12,828 ha), Fazilka (25,182 ha), Ferozepur (17,257 ha), and Kapurthala (17,574 ha).

Punjab’s Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh confirmed that the death toll from the floods has risen to 56 across the state.
