Feeling betrayed by her boyfriend and by the law, who allegedly did not accept her complaint, a 23-year-old girl committed suicide on Wednesday by consuming phenyl. The victim’s family, residents of Byculla, said that the girl was in a relationship with Aijaz Mohammad since 2011. “He forced her to have a physical relationship with him by saying that he would marry her. But, in July, he dumped her,” said a family member.

After the betrayal, the woman, who worked as a nurse at a hospital, felt helpless and approached the police to register a complaint against Mohammad. But, her family alleges that officials forced her to leave without listening to her or filing a complaint. However, Vinayak Deshmukh, DCP, said, “The girl gave us a complaint letter against the accused, Mohammad, on August 28. Following which she was called to the police station on Sunday to register her statement. On Monday, she drank phenyl and attempted to end her life.”
