Police Commissioner goes to Mumbai with revised draft; 342 junctions identified for installation of cameras at cost of Rs 28 crore
After a 12-hour discussion on security surveillance, the police are sending a fresh proposal to the government for installing 1,000 CCTV cameras in the city. Police commissioner Meeran Chaddha Borwankar prepared the revised draft of the proposal and left for Mumbai yesterday to submit it.

According to police sources, 342 junctions in the city have been identified for the installation of a total of 1,000 CCTV cameras at an estimated cost of Rs 28 crore. According to Dnyaneshwar Phadatare, DCP Zone I, who conducted a mock drill at R-Deccan multiplex yesterday, the proposal for CCTV cameras that is being sent to Mumbai stands a good chance of gettting approved.

"We have conducted the drill to ensure and prepare citizens against any possible terror incident. Though the Deccan Multiplex has many CCTV cameras, there is not a single camera on the adjoining J M Road to capture any suspicious vehicle or movement," he said.
He added that though there were few cameras installed across the place, most of them belonged to private establishments for personal use. "We have proposed for the CCTV cameras on roads and junctions to enable an easy surveillance system," he said.
Senior Police Inspector Manohar Joshi of the Deccan Gymkhana police station said, "There is a need to check private CCTVs and find out how they operate by checking their video footages."
So far, the police have installed 16 CCTV cameras on trial basis at Laxmi Road, Mahatma Phule Mandai and Appa Balwant Chowk, which will be activated after getting the BSNL connectivity soon. A local control room will also start functioning at Vishrambaug police station.
