While the Aadhar card scheme continues to be shadowed by uncertainty over its future, the district administration is preparing for a fresh enrollment drive that will be launched next month. This time, the authorities hope to draw in more
registrations from under-represented sections of society, and are considering beginning the drive with the prisoners in Yerawada jail.

As of March 2014, 83 per cent of the citizens in the district had enrolled under the programme. “Although applying for the Aadhar card is not compulsory now, we want to provide it to the remaining population in the district,” said Vasundhara Barwe, the district in-charge for the campaign.

She added that there were some sections of society that were yet to receive the identification cards, such as prisoners, who would now be registered on priority basis.
