French President Emmanuel Macron held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, discussing ongoing efforts to secure peaceful resolutions to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, particularly the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, reported the PTI.

The call, initiated by the French side, follows Macron’s active role in European diplomacy, including recent talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump in Washington.

"Had a very good conversation with my friend President Macron. Exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia. Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership," PM Modi shared on X.

President Macron posted on 'X' that both leaders “coordinated positions on the war in Ukraine to move towards a just and lasting peace, with strong guarantees for Ukraine and Europe's security.”

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the leaders also discussed the Gaza crisis, with Macron sharing insights from recent high-level meetings in the US involving European and Ukrainian leaders, as per the PTI.

PM Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position favouring peaceful dialogue and early restoration of peace and stability in conflict zones.

The two leaders also reviewed progress in the bilateral cooperation, including in the areas of trade, defence, civil nuclear cooperation, technology and energy.

"They reaffirmed joint commitment to strengthen India-France Strategic partnership and mark 2026 as 'Year of Innovation' in a befitting manner," the PMO said.

A key highlight was the agreement to designate 2026 as the ‘Year of Innovation’ in honour of their growing partnership. Macron also extended support for the early conclusion of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Macron added that the two nations had agreed to intensify economic exchanges and strategic collaboration, calling it essential for ensuring both countries’ sovereignty and independence, according to the PTI.

The French President also referenced the AI Action Summit held in Paris earlier this year and expressed support for the upcoming AI Impact Summit to be hosted by New Delhi in 2026.

India and France committed to work closely towards multilateral reforms, particularly in the run-up to France’s G7 Presidency and India’s BRICS Presidency, both scheduled for 2026.
