Cops read strong message for rival Marne gang in shooting incident
The city police are yet to nab Nilesh Ghaiwal gang members for the firing that they allegedly were responsible for in a Kothrud locality on Monday night.
A college student, Sumit Naik, was injured in the firing.
In the incident, about 25 people from the Ghaiwal gang allegedly damaged vehicles and pelted stones in Shastri Nagar. They also opened fire on Naik, who the police believe is a Marne gang sympathiser. Naik was taken by surprise when he was out on the road at night.
Out to prove a point
The police suspect that the firing was carried out by the Ghaiwal gang to avenge last year's attack on its leader Nilesh Ghaiwal and send a strong message that it was alive and kicking after the reverses of last year.
Ghaiwal, who was externed from city in September 2009, had appealed against the order, and it was cancelled
last month.
ACP Sangram Sinh Nishandar said, "Prima facie, it looks like the Monday night attack was carried out to create panic among the members of the other gang. We are investigating the case."
Senior Police Inspector Chandrakant Ghodke said, "Nobody so far has been arrested in this case."
Case registered
The police have registered a complaint against Nilesh Ghaiwal, Santosh Gavande, Dipak Amale, Nilesh Gavande, Sada Marathe, Shyam Phatak and 25 others for attempt to murder and booked them under the Arms Act.
Ghodke said, "Naik is recuperating at a private hospital and the bullet in his stomach has been removed." DCP Dynaneshwar Phadtare said, "Five people were interrogated in connection with the case. Naik has no previous criminal record."
