A first information report (FIR) has been filed against five people in connection with the alleged suicide of a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at a private university in Greater Noida, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sudhir Kumar said. The police have taken two more people into custody for questioning, although they have not been arrested yet.
"An FIR has been lodged against five people. The investigation is ongoing... Two individuals have been taken for questioning, but they have not been arrested. Action will be taken based on the evidence," ADCP Sudhir Kumar told ANI.
The incident occurred in a private university, where a second-year BDS student was found dead in her hostel room. The police believe she died by suicide. Upon receiving information, the police acted swiftly and arranged for the postmortem of the body.
Following the tragedy, the woman's relatives expressed strong dissatisfaction with the university administration. In response, a dialogue was initiated between the family members and the university officials to address their concerns, ANI reported.
"Yesterday, a girl student of a private university died by suicide in the hostel. Upon receiving the information, the police took prompt action and arranged for the postmortem. The victim’s relatives were upset with the university administration. So, we facilitated a dialogue between them," said ADCP Sudhir Kumar.
As a result of the dialogue, the university has been directed to carry out a thorough investigation and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The family members have since left for the victim's hometown to conduct the last rites.
"During the discussion, the university was asked to establish a procedure to prevent such incidents from happening again. They were also directed to take action against those responsible. The relatives have now left for their village to carry out the last rites," ADCP Kumar added.
A family member, who identified himself as the victim’s brother, claimed that his sister had been harassed by faculty members, which allegedly contributed to her taking the extreme step, ANI reported. He described an incident that occurred a week before her death, where a teacher accused her of forging signatures on assignments.
"A week ago, a teacher accused my sister of forging signatures of professors on her assignments. My father visited the university and spoke to the administration, which assured him that his daughter would not be targeted. However, the very next day, the teacher mocked her, saying she was an ‘expert in doing signatures’, and also threatened her with failing her exams," he said.
The Knowledge Park police arrived at the university to conduct preliminary investigations. Forensic experts and senior police officers also examined the scene to gather further evidence.
The two university staff members who have been taken into custody are reportedly being questioned in relation to the complaint filed by the student's family. The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further developments will depend on the findings of the probe.
As the case progresses, authorities are focused on uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the student's death and addressing the allegations of harassment that have emerged.
