The latest entrant on Wanowrie's food lane is a new nook called Peter's Pan. With a bright purple hoarding, the caf ufffd looks like a fun, inviting place to hang out over lattes and pizzas. But, walk into Peter's Pan and you will be surprised to see that the wall-mounted menu seems to consist of a mostly breakfast spread.

This is a self-service restaurant, so we suggest you place your order at one shot. On offer are a variety of savoury and sweet eggless waffles and pancakes, eggs made to your choice, specialty omelettes and drinks including a couple of coffees, herbal teas and canned juice options.

While we awaited our order, we had a look around. Done up in a yellow and purple colour scheme, the wall over the kitchen counter offers a fun, mind-tickling read. Did you know that the world's largest waffle was made in 1986 in Chicago and measured a cool 3,000 square feet?

If your order hasn't yet arrived (their waffles do take a bit of time), you can check out another wall lined with caricatures depicting the life of nobility, to go with their 'Eat Like a King' motto.u00a0u00a0

Finally, our food arrived. Our Iced Coffee (Rs 45) came in first and ensured that we didn't opt for the second glass of hot coffee that we were contemplating. It offered a weak and watered-down start to our breakfast. The Peter's Cinnamon Toast (Rs 25) is simply white sliced bread, fried in an egg batter, so lightly drizzled with cinnamon that we could hardly taste it at all.u00a0

Next came the Farmer's Omelette (Rs 60) with a single slice of buttered toast, crunchy butter stir-fried veggies and a mashed potato side that needed more time in the microwave to have lost its previous day's chill. The omelette, loaded with salami, sausages, mushrooms and a cheese-filled center, packs quite a decent bite.

By this time the much-awaited Sausage and Salami Waffle (Rs 55) makes a scary appearance. The waffle is thick and hard to cut. It comes topped with (and not cooked into the waffle) salami and sausages that look ghostly white and taste of nothingness and loads of grated processed cheese. The taste and combination is all wrong.

Time for the sweet offerings: they have blueberry, strawberry, caramel and banana, nuts and chocolate waffles as well as pancakes. We opted for the Chocolate Marble Pancake (Rs 65). All three pancakes in the plate had a lightly burnt base and the chocolate sauce layer was the only saving grace of our meal.

Peter's Pan has a well-organised, see-through kitchen with separate counters for each of their sections. The staff is helpful and still in the learning stage, though it would really help if they smiled more often. Their pricing is value for money. Overall, Peter's Pan has obviously invested in their look and feel, now it's time they show the same amount of commitment to their food.
